May 14 2011 Friendship Shelter Music Festival
Sponsored by Bill & Linda Muzyl
Silent Auction Donators
Saturday, May 14th, 2011, starting at noon and ending around 10:30 p.m., a music festival will be taking place at the Gaylord High School Gornick Auditorium & Commons. It will be fun and different. The word 'eclectic' fits what will happen this day. There's something for most everyone.
The Program
12:00 | Main entrance Gaylord High School doors open |
12:15 | Michigan Northern Lights' thirteen members sing barbershop. This all lady four-part-harmony a cappella chorus is not only great music, their lively presentation is a riot. |
1:20 | Yankee Station with Melissa Wickson do rock and this well known band with Gaylord roots does it really well. |
3:00 | Alpine Bells' twelve members play traditional music using hand bells. It's different, it's fun, and they're good. |
4:05 | Doug Thomas and the Guy Monday Band do rock and funk. This fun and locally based band mixes it up with great vocals and seasoned musicians. |
5:30 | The Panjandrum Jazz Group is a jazz combo with some very talented Gaylord High School musicians who will play in the commons area between auditorium performances. |
6:05 | The six member Northern Michigan Flute Choir plays 20th century classical, Irish and movie scores. They are all pros and they are very good performers. |
7:10 | Vivo Strings' with the help of his young and very accomplished cello student, Allie Rutkowski, Jim Van Eizenga gave us a Johann Sebastian Bach history lesson complete with comparative examples of his compositions on viola. |
8:00 | Kayenne Baur, a sixteen year old singer with an eight year performance resume will entertain us in the commons with a variety of modern music. |
8:15 | Nancy Loushay-Helgeson, a very accomplished operatic singer, will perform musical theater standards, mostly Gershwin and Porter. Nancy's accompanist will be Ruthann Kyle.
|
9:15 | Vivo Duo (Kathy Volke on violin and viola and Grace Olson on flute) are planning some contemporary sounding duets. |
9:45 | The Three Plus One are all instructors at the Musik Haus and their performance is going to be fun. To round out the evening, we're going to hear some of our favorites by four great musicians playing violin, stand up bass, guitar and accordion. |
All these artists are donating their talents and time to help support the Friendship Shelter.
Tickets (actually wristbands) will be available at the door. Once you get a wrist band, you can attend any of the performances during the day. If you want to spend all day, great. If you only want to attend the performance of your favorite artist, that's great also. If you want to attend a performance, leave and come back later, that's alright too; just show your wrist band at the door.
The wristband price is up to you. We ask that you donate at least $5 per person to the Friendship Shelter, more if you can afford it.
There will be brief (about 3 minute) presentations by the shelter's executive director, Marilyn Kaczanowski, about the shelter when she introduces the performers. The shelter is much more than a safe and warm place to sleep and Marilyn will talk about the programs that help people achieve independent living.
There will be opportunities to sign up for the Friendship Shelter's newsletter.
Northwestern Bank has provided a portable credit card machine, so, if you are so moved, there will be opportunities to donate to the shelter.
There will be food, actually great food, cooked by Gaylord High School's Culinary Arts Class. Come early, stay late and eat at the festival.
Finally, there will be silent auctions. Businesses from all over the region have been donating items for this auction. Bid, maybe get a great price on something useful to you, and, support the shelter in the process.
The Friendship Shelter is facing a very difficult year. To keep the doors open, the shelter needs to fundraise more than $150,000 this year. It's a daunting task, but with your help, it can be done.
